Criteria for Essays:

                                    • Originality & Creativity           • Clarity of Theme

                                                • Grammar                                •Entries must be Legible (written or word processed)

                                                • Neatness                                •Essays should be between 300 and 500 words

A cover sheet must accompany each entry and include: Student’s Name; Student’s phone number & home address, including zip code; Name of parent or guardian and home phone number and email address, if applicable; Name of school and complete address; Grade level and counselor’s/teacher’s name.

All entries must be received no later than 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 8, 2012, at Birmingham Urban League, 1229 Third Avenue North or emailed to: Burbanleag@aol.com with the subject line: Essay Competition 2012. 

Finalists in each grade level will be asked to present their essay in oratorical format before a panel of judges to determine the grand prize winner. The top three winners will be recognized with cash prizes, as follows:

Grand Prize:    $300.00

1^st Runner-up:   $200.00

2^nd Runner-up: $100.00
