HOME BUYER EDUCATION SEMINAR

The Birmingham Urban League will hold its bi-monthly homebuyer education seminar to provide homebuyer education and financial literacy training for individuals seeking to become homeowners. This FREE workshop provides participants with an opportunity to address the overwhelming misconceptions surrounding the home buying process. Participants learn how to realistically prepare to purchase a home.

Urban League housing counselors and industry professionals cover topics that include residential loan applications; closing documents; home insurance, inspections, maintenance; neighborhood safety; fair housing laws and CreditSmart—a curriculum to help consumers understand, build and maintain better credit.

Black History Month Essay Competition
 
 
 
The Birmingham Urban League Youth Services Division, in partnership with the Birmingham Chapter of the Links, Inc., announces its annual Essay Competition for middle and high school students. All entries should address the theme: “Black Women in American History and Culture”

Criteria for Essays:

                                    • Originality & Creativity            Clarity of Theme

                                                • Grammar                                Entries must be Legible (written or word processed)

                                                • Neatness                                Essays should be between 300 and 500 words

A cover sheet must accompany each entry and include: Student’s Name; Student’s phone number & home address, including zip code; Name of parent or guardian and home phone number and email address, if applicable; Name of school and complete address; Grade level and counselor’s/teacher’s name.

All entries must be received no later than 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 8, 2012, at Birmingham Urban League, 1229 Third Avenue North or emailed to: Burbanleag@aol.com with the subject line: Essay Competition 2012. 

Finalists in each grade level will be asked to present their essay in oratorical format before a panel of judges to determine the grand prize winner. The top three winners will be recognized with cash prizes, as follows:

Grand Prize:    $300.00

1st Runner-up:   $200.00

2nd Runner-up: $100.00
