Event : Young Professionals "Throw Back Prom"

Event Description
The Birmingham Urban League Young Professionals will host the 2nd Annual Throwback Prom to benefit the Birmingham Urban League on Friday May 29, 2009.


The event will feature DJ B Brian playing hits from the 80's and 90's and will be hosted by Hot 107.7's Tasha Simone. There will be hors d'oeuvres, drinks, and more.

Location:
The Highland Conference Center located at 2012 Magnolia Avenue.

Black History Month Essay Competition for Middle & High School Students

In observance of the Black History Month and the Centennial celebration of the National Urban League, the Birmingham Urban League, Inc. in partnership with the Birmingham Chapter of The Links, Inc. and State Senator Priscilla Dunn, is sponsoring an Essay Competition for middle and high school students (6th –12th grades) in the Greater Birmingham area. All entries are to address the theme:

“The History of Black Economic Empowerment”

All entries must be received at the Birmingham Urban League office by Friday, February 12, 2010, no later than 4:30 p.m. or emailed to burbanleag@aol.com , subject line ‘Essay Competition.’ The finalists will be asked to make a presentation of their entry at a special program, which will be held on Friday, February 26, 2010. All finalists will be notified in advance as to the time and location. At this time, a panel of judges will select a grand prize winner, first and second runner-up for the middle and high school categories. Winners will be recognized with cash prizes as follows:

Grand prize              $200.00

1st Runner-up           $125.00

2ndRunner-up           $100.00


 
 
 

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

The Birmingham Urban League is accepting nominations for its Fifteenth Annual Multi-racial Friendship Recognition. The purpose of this event is to recognize persons, in the greater Birmingham area, who have maintained a long-standing and/or ongoing friendship with a person of another racial or ethnic background. The recognition is designed to celebrate relationships between individuals who understand and appreciate the value of friendships that span age, race and gender.

Nominations for the Recognition will be accepted from individuals, organizations, and businesses. Adults and youth are eligible.   To request a Nomination Package, call (205) 326-0162 or Download NOW Friendship Nomination.  The deadline for receiving nominations is Monday, March 1, 2010, at 4:30 p.m. A luncheon recognizing this year’s honorees will be held Friday, May 21, at the Harbert Center.
