YOUTH SERVICES PROGRAMS/ACTIVITIES

Youth Board:
The Youth Board is comprised of students from Birmingham area schools, ages 12-18.  Initiated in 1996, this initiative enables the League to provide year round programs which include leadership training, community service activities, recreational activities and educational enrichment.  Students meet on a monthly basis, elect officers and are guided by an Adult Advisory Board.

Adult Advisory Board:
The Adult Advisory Board was formed to assist the Youth Board.  This group of volunteers acts as mentors and positive role models.  They also provide technical support for the Youth Board.  Members include parents and community volunteers.

Black History Month Essay Competition:
Held annually in observance of the Black History Month Celebration.  Students in grade 6 through 12 throughout Metropolitan Birmingham area compete.  The criterion for the essay competition includes Originality, Creativity, and Legibility.

Education and Enrichment Activities:
The League enlists professional speakers to present workshops on various personal development issues.  Workshops include Character Building, Career Development, Financial Literacy and Health Awareness.  Youth also participate in community service and recreational activities.

Family Reading Nooks:
Through book grants from the National Urban League and Scholastic, Inc., the Birmingham Urban League supports early literacy and reading programs in local elementary schools, providing tens of thousands of books and furnishings for special reading areas to Birmingham area schools during the last few years.

NULITES Youth Leadership Summit:
The primary function of the Youth Summit is to prepare young people for the future.  Workshops for college bound and graduating seniors focus on the world of work and developing basic independent living skills.  The Youth Summit workshops also provide a platform for discussion and exploring a variety of issues relating to character building and leadership skills.  Annually, the League sponsors Youth Board members to attend the Summit.

Youth Doing the Right Thing:
Youth Doing the Right Thing is a celebratory event that recognizes middle and high school students in the areas of Academics, Community Service and Work Ethics.
